Dream meaning Dreaming of a near death experience

A near-death dream brings the dreamer to the edge of life and back: a tunnel, a brightening light, loved ones waiting, the sense of leaving the body and being called to return. Such dreams can be frightening or astonishingly peaceful, and they often come during illness, after surgery, in grief, or at a turning point that feels like the end of one life. Islamic teaching places sleep itself close to this threshold.

The Qur'an says that God takes the souls at the time of their death, and takes during sleep the souls whose time has yet to come, keeping some and sending others back until an appointed term; the Prophet taught Muslims to wake with the words, "Praise be to God who gave us life after He had caused us to die, and to Him is the rising."

Sufi teachers added their own counsel, die before you die: let the false self fall away while there is still life to live. Hieronymus Bosch painted souls rising through a tunnel toward light centuries before modern accounts described it.

Being turned back at the light is work still to be done and a life being given back to you; meeting the departed peacefully is consolation, sometimes with a message of forgiveness; fear at the threshold asks what remains unresolved. Such a dream often marks the ending of an old self and the beginning of a wiser one.

The waking words the Prophet taught are its answer, and so is one thing done with the life returned to you.
