Dream meaning Dreaming of money

Money in a dream is weighed by its kind, its quantity and how it came. A few lawful silver coins are provision, a need met, or good words received; many coins are worries or disputes that multiply with them, and counting coins without end is a burden of accounts.

Gold in a man's dream is read with caution: the Arabic for gold, dhahab, shares its root with going away, so gold found or worn is a loss, a worry or something that leaves; in a woman's dream gold jewellery is adornment, joy and a good marriage.

Finding money on the road is provision from an unexpected quarter, or a test of honesty; losing money is a loss to guard against in that matter, and being robbed is harm from someone to be careful of, though never a licence to accuse. Paper money that turns worthless is effort that yields nothing until its way is changed.

Giving money in charity in a dream is blessing and increase, for the Prophet said that charity never decreases wealth, and paying a debt is release. A treasure dug from the earth is provision, or knowledge, found through effort.

The spiritual meaning of money in dreams

Money is stored effort and exchange, and in dreams it stands for what you value and what flows to you and from you. Spiritually it is rizq, the provision God apportions, and a dream of money is less about a bank balance than about how provision is moving in your life: arriving, leaking away, held too tightly or given freely. Money in a dream also measures worth. Feeling rich in the dream is confidence and gratitude; feeling poor is a fear of lack or a sense of being undervalued. How the money came, whether earned, found, given or taken, decides whether the dream is blessing or warning.

Biblical meaning of money in dreams

The Bible does not condemn money; it warns about its hold on the heart. Paul wrote that the love of money is the root of all evil, and Jesus said no one can serve God and mammon. A dream in which money rules you, hoarded, worried over or loved, is read biblically as a warning to put God first. Judas's thirty pieces of silver are the picture of money that betrays.

Scripture also shows money as stewardship and blessing. In the parable of the talents the servants who traded with what they were given were praised, and the one who buried his talent was rebuked; the widow's two small coins were worth more than all the rich men's gifts; Proverbs says the blessing of the Lord makes rich and adds no sorrow with it. The woman who swept her house for a lost silver coin and rejoiced when she found it is the picture of a soul found again. Using money well in a dream is faithfulness rewarded.

Money in Islamic dream interpretation: Ibn Sirin

The dream book that carries Ibn Sirin's name reads silver coins as words and dealings: well struck white coins are good words or a need met, and counterfeit coins are false words or a dealing that cheats. Its well-known principle that a few coins are better than many rests on this: a little lawful money is provision, while a great heap brings the disputes and worries that come with it.

Paper money did not exist in Ibn Sirin's time, so later interpreters read banknotes by analogy with coins, by their number, their condition and where they came from. A clean new note is a clean gain; a torn or faded note is a gain that will not hold.

Jung and Freud on money dreams

Jungian analysts read money as psychic energy and value: what you spend in a dream is what you invest your life in, and running out of money is running out of energy or self-worth. Finding money is finding a resource in yourself you did not know you had.

Sigmund Freud, in a short paper of 1908, connected the way people hold on to money or let it go with early lessons in holding on and letting go, and tied careful, orderly saving to one kind of character. A Freudian reading of a money dream asks what you are refusing to release or afraid to give.

Finding money in a dream

Money found is provision you did not work for, and when it plainly belongs to someone else, it is a test of your honesty. Coins found in the street are small gains and good words; a bundle of notes found in a drawer or an old coat is a resource forgotten and now returned to you. Finding money in your own house is blessing within the family. Finding money and handing it back is integrity that brings a greater reward. Picking up coin after coin without end is chasing small gains at the cost of your time.

Receiving money, or being given money

Being given money is help, recognition or a debt repaid. Money from a parent is their support and prayers for you; from a stranger, help from where you did not expect it; from someone who has died, provision and blessing, for what the dead give is good. Receiving a salary or payment in the dream is effort that will be rewarded. Being given money you did not want is a favour that brings an obligation with it.

Giving money away, lending or paying

Giving money in charity is blessing and increase, and it is one of the best forms of the dream. Lending money is trust placed in someone, and a borrower who takes it gratefully is a trust that will be honoured. Paying a bill or a debt is release from a burden. Being unable to pay, or searching your pockets and finding nothing, is a fear of falling short in a responsibility, and it calls for planning and trust in God rather than dread.

Losing money, or money being stolen

Money slipping from your pocket is a warning to watch where your provision is leaking: carelessness at work, a promise half forgotten, a resource slipping away. Losing a wallet or purse is losing something personal, a secret, your security or your sense of who you are. A theft in the dream is a person who takes advantage, to be watched quietly; a dream is never grounds for accusing anyone. Stealing money in the dream is taking what is not yours in some other form, credit, time or affection, and the dream calls you to return it.

Counting money, coins and notes

Counting money with satisfaction is a matter going well and accounts in order; counting again and again is anxiety over provision. Coins are small matters, words and daily dealings; notes are larger affairs. Counterfeit money is a person or an offer that is not what it seems. Foreign currency is a gain or a matter connected with travel or with people far away. Money that crumbles or fades in your hands is a hope that does not keep its value.

Winning the lottery or sudden riches

Winning the lottery or a fortune in a dream is a sudden change of state, a windfall of opportunity or a turn in circumstances. Because gambling is forbidden in Islam and frowned upon in much of Christian teaching, the dream also asks whether you are hoping for ease without effort. Sudden wealth that makes you anxious is the burden that comes with great responsibility; sudden wealth you share is blessing that multiplies.

Money dreams for a woman and a pregnant woman

For a woman, money given to her by her husband is care and provision in the marriage; money found in her kitchen or her handbag is blessing for the household. A single woman who receives money from a man is a suitor's interest or a proposal approaching. For a pregnant woman, coins or notes given to her are provision coming with the child, and a full purse is a home that will lack nothing in the months ahead.

Money dreams for a man and a single person

For a man, money earned in the dream is effort rewarded at work, money lost is a setback to guard against in business, and a great heap of coins is worries and disputes that come with wealth. For a single person, money found or given is an opportunity or a relationship of value entering their life, and sharing money with someone is a partnership forming.
