Dream meaning Dreaming of a house

The house you dream of is your own person, your household and your standing, and whatever happens to the house happens there. A spacious, bright house is a good life, a wide provision and a household at ease; a narrow or dark house, hardship or worry in the home.

Building a house is a marriage, a new household or provision that settles; moving into a new house is a new state, such as a marriage, a position or a better condition. A house collapsing, or its roof falling, is trouble reaching the head of the household or its affairs, and the dream warns so that what is weak can be mended; a house being repaired is a matter set right.

Cleaning a house is repentance and a worry lifted. Rooms are the household's affairs: finding a room one never knew was there is an opening in the family's affairs not yet noticed; a locked room is a matter kept from the dreamer for a time. A house on fire is a dispute or a trial in the home, to be met with prayer and reconciliation; a stranger living in one's house is a claim or an intrusion to guard against.

Snakes, heaviness or a presence felt in the house night after night are read as the eye or sihr at work, and ruqya lifts them.

Spiritual meaning of a house in a dream

In almost every school of dream reading, the house you dream of is yourself and your life as you are living it. Its rooms are your affairs, its doors the ways in and out of your days, its foundations what you stand on, and the state of the house is the state of the dreamer. House dreams come at times of change: when a household forms or breaks apart, a career shifts, a child leaves, or a person outgrows the life they built. Read the house as a portrait, and ask what condition it is in, whose it is, and how you move through it.

Jung's house dream and the psychological reading

The best known house dream in psychology is Jung's own. In 1909, travelling to America with Freud, he dreamed of a house of several storeys: a furnished upper floor, a medieval ground floor, a Roman cellar, and beneath it a cave holding bones and broken pottery. He took the house as an image of the psyche, the upper floors as conscious life and each lower level as an older layer of the unconscious, and the dream fed his idea of the collective unconscious. In his reading, finding new rooms is finding parts of yourself you have not yet lived in.

Freud wrote that the house is the one regular dream image of the whole human body, with doors and windows standing for its openings. Where Jung sees the house as the self, Freud sees the body and its desires.

Biblical meaning of a house in dreams

The Bible builds much of its teaching on the house. Jesus spoke of the wise man who built on rock and the foolish man who built on sand, so a house with firm foundations is a life grounded in faith, and a house on shifting ground is a life built on what will not last. The psalm says that unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labour in vain.

Isaiah's word to King Hezekiah, set your house in order, makes a dream of tidying or repairing a house a call to put your affairs and your soul right. In my Father's house are many rooms, Jesus told his disciples, and a large house full of light and rooms is read by Christian dreamers as the promise of a place prepared.

Islamic interpretation of the house (Ibn Sirin)

In the dream books attributed to Ibn Sirin, a man's house is also his wife, and what happens to the house touches her and the marriage; it is his body and his standing as well. A spacious house is good in this world, and a new, wide house is an improvement in one's state. An unknown house the dreamer enters, unlike any house of this world, is read as the next life: beautiful and spacious, it is reward; dark and narrow, a call to repent. A house built anew is a marriage or a household restored.

An old house or your childhood home in a dream

An old house is the past returning: a matter from earlier years asking to be settled, a memory that still shapes you, or a longing for the person you were. Your childhood home is the root of your character, and it appears when something in the present has touched an old wound or an old joy. An old house in good repair is the past honoured and at peace; a derelict one is a part of your history left without care. Returning to a house you once shared with someone now gone is a bond that still asks for your prayer.

A new house, buying a house or moving home

A new house is a change of condition: a marriage, a new post, a better condition, or a change in how you see yourself. Buying a house is taking up a responsibility that will settle you; building one is founding a household or a long work. Moving home is leaving one stage of life for another, and the feeling of the move is the feeling of the change, whether relief, sadness or eagerness. A house too large for you is a blessing you are growing into; a house too small is a life you have outgrown.

Finding new rooms in a house

Finding a room you never knew was there is among the most common and most hopeful house dreams. It is an opening not yet noticed: a talent, a possibility, a provision or a relationship already waiting in your own life. A bright, furnished room is a gift ready to be used; an empty room is space you are free to fill; a dusty room is a gift neglected and asking to be taken up again. A locked door you cannot open is a matter kept from you for now, and its time will come.

A house on fire, flooding or collapsing

Flames in the house are a quarrel in the family, or a passion that has caught and spread beyond control, and putting them out is reconciliation. Water flooding a house is worry pouring into home life, and the water receding is that trial passing. Walls or a roof coming down point to the household's support giving way, and the warning comes early enough for the weak beam to be replaced; getting out before the collapse is protection. Cracks in the walls are small faults in the household's trust, to be repaired while they are small.

Intruders, burglars or a haunted house

A stranger or a burglar entering your house is someone intruding on your private affairs, a claim on what is yours, or a loss to guard against, and locking the door against them is protection. Recognising the intruder points to the source.

A house that feels haunted, with a presence in the rooms, heaviness or sounds at night, is read in the tradition as the eye, sihr or a jinn presence when it returns night after night. Ruqya lifts it, and so does reciting Surat al-Baqarah in the house, for the Prophet said that Satan flees the house in which it is recited.

House dream for a woman and a pregnant woman

For a woman, the house is her household and the life she shapes within it. Cleaning or arranging a house is putting her affairs in order and a worry lifting, and a married woman who sees her house widen sees blessing enter her marriage. For a single woman, a new house is marriage approaching.

For a pregnant woman, preparing a room is preparing for the child, and a bright, spacious house is ease in the months ahead and a welcome already waiting.

House dream for a man and a single person

For a man, the house is his standing and the people in his care. Building or repairing it is strengthening his household and his livelihood; a leaking roof is a duty he has let slip. For a single person, building a house or being handed its keys is marriage drawing near, and a house with a lit window at night is a welcome waiting for them.
