Dream meaning Dreaming of death

Death seen in a dream is one of the most frightening images the night brings and one of the most gently read by the interpreters, who almost never read it as dying. Seeing oneself die is long life, a change of state, or repentance from a fault; seeing oneself die and return to life is repentance accepted, or relief after hardship.

Seeing a living person die is long life for that person, or a change in the dreamer's bond with them. It is never news of their death, and it is never told to them as such. Weeping for the dead without wailing is relief and ease in the family; loud wailing and the tearing of clothes is a hardship to be met with patience.

A burial is confinement or a matter closed; being buried alive is a pressing matter or a debt not yet lifted. Walking in a funeral is following an authority or a matter to its end. The dead who speak in dreams speak truly, the interpreters say, because they dwell in the abode of truth, and what they ask for is answered, whether a prayer, a charity or a debt settled.

No one is told of a death from a dream, and no death is dated from one. A death dream that frightened you is answered the old way: turn onto your other side, give something in charity, and recount it to no one.

The spiritual meaning of death in dreams

In the language of dreams, death is the strongest word for change. Something ends so that something else can begin: a stage of life, a role, a relationship, a way of seeing yourself. That is why death dreams so often arrive at thresholds, before a move, a marriage, a new post, a conversion or the close of a long season of trouble. The fear you feel on waking belongs to the size of the change, not to any threat to your life. In tarot the Death card carries the same lesson: it is the thirteenth card of transformation, and it almost never means dying.

Biblical meaning of death in a dream

Scripture speaks of death as the gate of new life before it speaks of it as an end. Jesus said that unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it abides alone, but if it dies it brings forth much fruit (John 12:24). Paul wrote that believers are buried with Christ by baptism so that they walk in newness of life (Romans 6), and that anyone in Christ is a new creation, the old things passed away. Dying in a dream, read biblically, is the old self being laid down.

Scripture also shows a word of death turned by prayer. King Hezekiah was told to set his house in order, prayed with tears, and was given fifteen more years. A death dream that frightens is answered, as he answered, by turning to God.

Death in Islamic dream interpretation: Ibn Sirin

The reading of one's own death as a long life goes back to the dream book that carries Ibn Sirin's name, which adds that dying and rising again is wealth after poverty. Being carried on a bier with people walking behind is read in the classical books as rising in standing, with people following the dreamer's lead.

The interpreters almost never read death in a dream as dying, and they never date a death from a dream. A frightening dream is met with refuge in God from its harm, charity and silence.

Jung and Freud on dreams of dying

Carl Jung and the analysts who followed him read death in dreams as transformation: an old attitude of the ego dying so that a new one can be born, very often in the middle of life, when the first half's ambitions give way to the second half's questions. Marie-Louise von Franz, his close collaborator, wrote a whole book on dreams and death and found them full of images of journeys, weddings and new houses rather than endings.

Sigmund Freud placed dreams of the death of a loved relative among the typical dreams in The Interpretation of Dreams. He traced the ones accompanied by grief back to wishes of early childhood, when being dead meant only being gone away, and held that they reveal no present wish.

Dreaming of your own death

Your own death in a dream promises years, not an end. Dying peacefully is a matter closed well; dying in fear or pain is a hard ending to something you clung to, after which ease comes. Watching your own funeral or burial from outside is seeing yourself from a distance: how others regard you, or a part of your life you are ready to leave behind. Waking inside the dream after dying, alive again, is a second chance: a fault left behind, a hardship lifted. Being told the day of your death is never taken as a date; it is a call to set your affairs and your heart in order.

Dreaming of a loved one dying

A parent dying in your dream is long life for that parent and, very often, the moment you take on something they used to carry. A partner dying is an old form of the marriage ending so that a new one can begin. A child dying is a child growing up and away from the stage you knew. None of these is news of a death, and the dream is never passed on to the person as a warning. Dreaming that someone who is suffering has died is read by many interpreters as the end of what they suffer, and seeing a friend die is a friendship entering a new form.

Being killed, or killing someone, in a dream

Being killed in a dream is a sudden change forced on you from outside, a decision taken over your head or a role taken from you; being killed and feeling no pain is a change that harms you less than you fear. Killing someone in a dream is rarely about that person's life. It is cutting off what they stand for in you, an influence, a dependence or a habit, and interpreters often read benefit passing from the killer to the one killed. Killing in self-defence is overcoming an adversary.

Coffins, graves and shrouds

A coffin is a matter closed and set aside; climbing out of a coffin is a matter you thought finished coming back to life. Digging a grave is building a house or settling somewhere for a long time in the classical books, and standing at an open grave is a reminder of the hereafter that softens the heart. A white shroud is purity and a clean ending; black mourning clothes are grief honoured, and taking them off is the end of mourning. Visiting graves in a dream is prayer for the dead returned to you as mercy.

Death dreams for a woman and a pregnant woman

For a woman, seeing her husband die in a dream is long life for him and a new stage in the marriage, and seeing her own death is an end to a worry she has carried. A single woman who dreams of her own death is leaving one family life for another, and interpreters often read it as a marriage approaching.

For a pregnant woman, death dreams are common in the waiting months and carry no bad omen. Dying in the dream is the woman she was giving way to the mother she is becoming, and a death followed by new life is the birth itself, read as safe arrival.

Death dreams for a man and a single person

For a man, his own death in a dream is long life and a change of post or circumstance: a promotion, a move, a debt cleared. Seeing his father die is long life for the father and responsibility passing to the son. For a single person, death dreams mark the close of one chapter and the opening of another, and dying and being washed is a fresh start.

When death dreams keep coming back

A run of death dreams usually accompanies a long transition that has not yet run its course: the old life has not been let go, and the dream repeats the ending until it is accepted. Name what is ending, mourn it and let it go. In the Islamic tradition the dreamer gives charity, seeks refuge in God and turns onto the other side; in the Christian tradition, Psalm 23 is prayed for the valley of the shadow of death, where the Shepherd walks with the dreamer and fear has no place.
