Dream meaning Dreaming of being chased

In a dream of being chased, running from a pursuer through corridors or darkening streets, the interpreters look at who pursues and how the chase ends. A pursuer is an enemy or a worry pressing on the dreamer.

A known person is a dispute or a claim coming from that person, a stranger an adversary not yet recognised, and an animal an enemy of that animal's nature: a lion a powerful one, a dog a low and quarrelsome one, a snake a hidden one. Escaping, hiding safely, or reaching a mosque or one's own family is safety from that harm; being caught is a trial that reaches the dreamer, lightened if they stand and answer it.

Being pursued by someone who has died is something owed to them that asks to be settled: a debt, a promise, a prayer. Running without moving is a matter the dreamer cannot yet escape by effort alone, and often, too, the body's side of sleep, in which the limbs do not answer.

When the pursuer returns night after night, or comes with a pressing on the chest or a presence felt in the room, the tradition reads more than a worry: such signs are for one who knows that work to read, and ruqya lifts what presses. The dream is never a licence to accuse the person who chased you. If you got away, the escape is a mercy to thank God for.

If the chase stays with you, read the two chapters of refuge that close the Qur'an before you sleep again, and let the dream go untold.

Spiritual meaning of being chased in a dream

The chase dream is among the most universal dreams there are, and it always has the same shape: something comes after you, and you run. Spiritually it is a pressure you have not yet faced, whether it comes from a person, a debt, a duty, a fear or a part of your own life. Running is avoidance, hiding is waiting, turning round is courage. The identity of the pursuer tells what presses on you, and the ending tells how the matter will go. A chase that ends in safety brings relief, because it shows you already have a way out.

Biblical meaning of being chased in a dream

Proverbs says the wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion, so a chase with no visible pursuer is a fear without substance, or a conscience pressing. David was hunted by Saul for years and twice spared him when he could have struck, which makes being chased by someone you could overcome a test of restraint.

Elijah fled from Jezebel into the wilderness, despaired under a broom tree and was fed by an angel, and Israel ran from Pharaoh's chariots until the sea opened. In a Christian dream a chase often ends in a provision or a deliverance the runner could never have arranged.

Islamic interpretation of being chased (Ibn Sirin)

In the dream books attributed to Ibn Sirin, fleeing from what you fear is safety from it. The reading follows Moses in the Qur'an, who told Pharaoh that he fled from them when he feared them, and that his Lord then granted him wisdom and made him one of the messengers. Escape in a dream is therefore not cowardice: it is protection, and often the start of an opening. Fleeing a known person who pursues you is a dispute with them that ends in your safety.

Being chased in psychology: Jung and Freud

Jung read the pursuer as the shadow, the part of yourself you refuse to look at, which chases you precisely because you run: the longer it is avoided, the more frightening it grows. Jungian dreamwork advises turning to face the pursuer, even within the dream, and asking what it wants. Freud placed such dreams among anxiety dreams, in which a repressed impulse, often aggressive or sexual, breaks through in disguise and the dreamer flees it. Surveys of typical dreams find being chased the most widely reported theme of all, across cultures and ages.

Chased by a man, a stranger or someone with a knife

A stranger chasing you is an adversary not yet recognised, or a pressure whose source you have not named. A man chasing a woman is pressure from a man in her life, an unwanted approach or a demand, and her escape is her safety from it. Someone chasing you with a knife is the threat of cutting words or a sharp loss, and disarming them is overcoming it. Being chased by the police is a duty, a debt or a rule you have been avoiding, a matter that asks to be settled.

Chased by someone you know, or by an ex

A family member chasing you is an expectation within the family you have been avoiding; a friend chasing you is a friendship asking for something you have not given. An ex chasing you is the past pursuing the present, feelings or matters from that relationship still unsettled, and the dream asks you to close them properly. A boss chasing you is work pressure that has become personal. The dream shows the pressure, never the other person's intentions, and it is no ground for accusing anyone.

Chased by a dog, a lion, a snake or a bear

An animal pursuer takes the character of the animal. A dog is a low, quarrelsome adversary, or loyalty turned to aggression, and a black dog is the same with more malice in it. A lion is a powerful person, an authority or a strong rival. A snake is a hidden enemy, or envy creeping after you. A bear is a heavy, possessive force, often a person whose protection has turned into control, and a wolf is someone hungry for what is yours. Escaping the animal is safety; killing it is victory.

Chased by a shadow, a monster or something unseen

A shadow figure or a faceless pursuer is a fear without a name, the unclaimed part of yourself in Jung's reading. A monster or a zombie is a fear grown larger than its real size, or a habit that feeds on your strength. A pursuer you never see, felt only as dread at your back, belongs to the unseen, and when it comes night after night the tradition reads it with the other signs of the unseen at work. The Prophet taught that whoever recites the Throne Verse on going to bed has a guardian from God through the night, and no devil comes near until morning.

Turning to face the pursuer, or flying away

Turning to face what chases you, and watching it shrink, stop or change, is the strongest ending a chase dream can have: the fear loses its power once it is faced, and the matter it stood for will yield to the same courage in waking life. Rising into the air or climbing high out of reach is rising above the pressure. Being found in your hiding place is a matter you can no longer avoid. A chase that never ends, through street after street, is a matter left open too long.

Chased dream for a woman, a pregnant woman, a man and a single person

For a woman, a chase is most often pressure from the expectations around her, at home or at work, and a man chasing her is an approach or a demand she has every right to refuse. For a pregnant woman, being chased is the weight of what lies ahead pressing on her; reaching safety is that passage made in peace, and the dream speaks of the child only to show it protected.

For a man, a chase is competition, debt or responsibility pressing, and standing to face it is winning respect. For a single person, being chased by an admirer is an approach that will come, and running from it is hesitation about commitment.

Why chase dreams keep coming back

A recurring chase is a matter you keep postponing, and the pursuer returns because the matter does: a debt, a conversation, a decision, an apology. When it is settled in waking life the dream usually stops. When it continues with heaviness and fear on waking, the protections before sleep and a reading by one who knows that work will show what presses, and ruqya lifts it.
