A cat in a dream belongs to the house, because the cat is the animal that goes in and out among the family: the Prophet said of cats that they are not unclean, for they are among those who go about among you.
Dream meaning Dreaming of a cat
Symbols
A calm, clean cat resting in the house is ease and a household in order, a small blessing that stays; feeding a cat or giving it water is mercy rewarded, and neglecting it is a warning, for the Prophet told of a woman who was punished because she shut a cat away and neither fed it nor let it find food for itself.
A cat that steals food from the kitchen is read in the classical books as a loss through someone close: a leak in the household's provision or its secrets. It is closed with care and never used to accuse anyone. A cat that scratches or bites is a small harm from a hidden quarter, or a dispute with someone the dreamer let near; a wild or large cat is a stronger adversary of the same kind.
A cat that brings its kittens into the house is a household growing in blessing. Chasing a cat away is setting a limit on someone who takes liberties; a cat that follows the dreamer everywhere is a close companion whose loyalty is still to be proved. A black cat that appears night after night, with a presence felt in the room or a heaviness on waking, is lifted with ruqya.
In ancient Egypt the cat goddess Bastet guarded the home, and the image of the cat as keeper of the household is older than any of the books. The Companion Abu Hurayra, who played with a little cat while tending his family's sheep, took his name from it, so a cat kept with kindness is a small mercy that brings a good name.
The spiritual meaning of cats in dreams
The cat lives in the house and never quite belongs to it. It comes and goes at night, sees in the dark and watches what people do not notice, and so in the spiritual reading a cat stands at the border of the seen and the unseen. A cat in a dream speaks of intuition, independence and the household's hidden life: who comes and goes, what is said in private, what is quietly taken or quietly protected. A cat that sits calmly and looks at you is a sign to trust what you sense but cannot prove. A cat that slips away from your hand is something in your home or your heart that will not be held by force.
Is there a biblical meaning of cats in dreams?
The Bible is almost silent about cats. They do not appear in the Old or New Testament as most Protestant Bibles print them, and the one clear mention is in the Letter of Jeremiah, printed in Catholic and Orthodox Bibles as part of Baruch, where cats are seen sitting on the heads of lifeless idols. A biblical reading therefore takes its cue from that image and from scripture's wider language: a cat perched on something you honour is a reminder that what cannot speak or save does not deserve your devotion.
The fear of cats as witches' companions belongs to medieval European folklore, not to scripture, and a Christian reader is free of it. The cat is read by what it does in the dream, as any of God's creatures is.
Cats in Islamic dream interpretation: Ibn Sirin
The dream book that carries Ibn Sirin's name reads the cat on the people of the house. A cat is a servant who guards the home, or a thief from within the household or close to it; a female cat is a woman of the house who is cunning and not to be trusted with secrets. A cat that is calm and well kept is a faithful servant, and a wild or restless cat is one who takes what is not his.
These readings sit beside the Prophet's own gentleness toward cats, and the interpreters never use them to accuse anyone. A dream that points to a leak in the household is answered by care with money and words, and by prayer for protection over the home.
The psychological reading: Jung and Freud
Jungian analysts read the cat as an image of the feminine principle, of instinct that will not be domesticated, and of the independent part of the psyche that keeps its own counsel. For a man, a cat in a Jungian dream often stands for the anima, the inner feminine; for a woman, it can be her own self-possession and wildness. Sigmund Freud gave cats no fixed meaning. His method was to ask the dreamer what came to mind about this particular cat, a childhood pet, a neighbour's cat, a feeling of being watched, and to read the dream from those associations.
A cat attacking or biting you
A cat that attacks is a hidden adversary who comes out into the open, often someone who seemed harmless or was let close. A bite on the hand is a betrayal touching your money or your work; a scratch on the face is a word against your name. Fighting the cat off is defending yourself and winning; being unable to drive it away is a person whose presence wears on you until a limit is set. A cat that hisses but does not strike is a warning to keep your distance from someone who is unhappy with you.
Kittens in a dream
Kittens are small joys, small blessings and new beginnings that need care: a child, a project, a friendship. A litter of healthy kittens is increase in the household. Holding a kitten is gentleness given and received, and a kitten that follows you is a small good matter that attaches itself to you. Abandoned or crying kittens are responsibilities you have overlooked, and finding a home for them is the good you will do. Many kittens filling a room are many small tasks or children's needs claiming your time.
A cat in the house, and feeding or stroking a cat
A cat curled up by the fire or on the bed is comfort, safety and a settled home. Stroking a calm cat that purrs is affection returned and peace in the household. Feeding a hungry cat is mercy that is rewarded, and the dream often follows a kindness you did while awake. A cat that refuses food from you is someone who will not accept your help. A cat that brings you a mouse or a bird is a gift or a service you did not ask for, a sign of loyalty in its own language.
A dead, injured or lost cat
A dead cat is a hidden threat that has ended, or a betrayal that will not reach you. An injured cat is a household member or a servant who needs protection, or your own intuition wounded by being ignored. Losing your cat is losing touch with your instinct or your independence, and finding it again is getting that back. Killing a cat that attacked you is overcoming a deceiver; harming a gentle cat is a warning against unkindness, for the tradition takes cruelty to animals seriously.
Cat colours: black, white, ginger and grey
In Britain a black cat crossing your path has long been counted good luck, but in the dream traditions a black cat is read with care. Calm and fleeting, it is a mystery or an intuition; repeated and menacing, with a presence in the room, it is the cat the tradition treats with ruqya. A white cat is a friend who looks pure and is not always so, or, when it is gentle, good news. A ginger or orange cat is warmth, playfulness and a lively person entering your life. A grey cat is uncertainty, a matter neither clearly good nor clearly bad, or an older person's quiet wisdom.
Cat dreams for a woman and a pregnant woman
For a woman, a calm cat in her home is a peaceful household, and a cat that steals or scratches is a woman near her who envies her or carries tales. A married woman who sees a cat on her bed reads it on someone trying to come between her and her husband, answered with discretion and protection. For a pregnant woman, a gentle cat or kittens are blessing and a tender time, and a cat she drives from the house is envy turned away; the dream speaks of the people around her, not of the child.
Cat dreams for a man and a single person
For a man, a cat is often a woman he knows: a charming one if the cat is affectionate, a cunning one if it scratches or steals. A cat that follows him is a person who wants something from him. For a single person, an affectionate cat is a romance that is pleasant but independent, and a cat that turns on them is a suitor whose charm hides self-interest. A cat that stays and lets itself be held is a friendship or love that will last.
Many cats, and cats that keep returning
A house full of cats is a house full of comings and goings: many visitors, many opinions and secrets that do not stay inside. Too many cats to feed is a household stretched thin. A cat that returns every night, especially a black one watching from a corner, together with heaviness, bad sleep or quarrels without reason, is read in the tradition as envy, the eye or sihr, lifted with ruqya by someone who knows that work.
