Dream meaning Dreaming of a spider

A spider in a dream is cunning with little real strength: a weak adversary who works by traps and threads, a scheme that looks elaborate but cannot hold, or a craftsman who builds patiently from almost nothing. The Qur'an gives the key: those who take protectors other than God are like the spider that takes a house, and the frailest of houses is the spider's house.

So a web spun across the dreamer's path or door is an obstacle made of something weak, which a firm hand and trust in God will sweep away; being caught in a web is being entangled in a petty scheme or a flimsy obligation that looks stronger than it is.

Cobwebs gathering in the corners of the house are neglect, a house where cleanliness, prayer and remembrance have been let slip, and clearing them is setting the house right again. A large spider is a cunning adversary, and its bite is harm that arrives through a trick; killing it or putting it out is defeating that cunning. Many small spiders are many small, persistent troubles, dealt with one by one.

A spider weaving calmly in a place of its own is a patient work taking shape, or a skill used honestly. The sira tells that when the Prophet and Abu Bakr hid in the cave on the road to Medina, a spider's web across the entrance turned the pursuers away, so a web over a hiding place is protection given through the weakest of means.

A spider that comes back night after night, large and close, with heaviness in the room, is something ruqya lifts.

Spiritual meaning of a spider in a dream

The spider builds a whole house out of its own body, thread by thread, and then waits. Spiritually it holds two meanings at once, patient making and the trap, and your dream carries one or the other according to whether you are watching the spider work or caught in what it built. A spider dream asks what has been woven around you, by others or by your own habits, and how strong it really is. Most of what a spider builds is weaker than it looks, and the dream often comes to show that a trouble you feared will tear at the first firm touch.

Islamic interpretation of the spider (Ibn Sirin)

In the dream books attributed to Ibn Sirin, the spider is a weak man of little standing, and its web is something frail: a weak hold on a matter, or a weak hold on faith. A spider living in the house is such a person within reach of the household, and its threads are his schemes.

The Qur'an gives the spider a chapter of its own, Surat al-Ankabut, named for the frail house it spins. The same thread carries the memory of the cave of Thawr, so in Muslim dream reading the web that traps in one dream protects in another, when it is God who places it.

Biblical meaning of spiders in dreams

The Bible uses the web for false security. In Job, the trust of the godless is called a spider's web, something leaned on that will not hold, and Isaiah describes the wicked weaving webs that can never become clothing, works that cover nothing. A web in a Christian dreamer's life is a reliance that will fail, or a scheme that cannot hold.

The King James Bible also places the spider in kings' palaces in Proverbs, a small creature that takes hold with its hands, so a spider in a grand room is perseverance that gets in where strength cannot.

Spider dreams in psychology: Jung and Freud

Freud's colleague Karl Abraham wrote a paper in 1922 on the spider as a dream symbol, reading it as the dangerous, possessive mother, and Freud adopted his reading. In that line, a spider dream asks about an enveloping relationship, a closeness that holds too tightly. Jungian writers follow the devouring side of the mother archetype as well, and they also see the spider at the centre of its web as the Self at the centre of the psyche, the weaver of a life's pattern. A spider spinning calmly is order being made; a spider rushing at you is a force you feel is consuming you.

A spider bite in a dream

A bite is the trick landing: a deception, a scheme, a word slipped into the right ear. A bite on the hand touches your work and dealings; on the leg or foot, your plans and movements; on the neck or face, your reputation. A bite that swells is harm that spreads before it is noticed, and a bite that does not hurt is a trick that fails. Shaking the spider off before it bites is refusing to be drawn in.

Killing a spider in a dream

Killing a spider is defeating cunning: a scheme exposed, a manipulative person held at a distance, a petty trouble ended. Crushing a large spider is overcoming an adversary who looked more frightening than they were, and killing many spiders is clearing a run of small troubles one after another. Killing a spider that was only weaving quietly in its corner is ending a work that harmed no one, and the dream asks you to look at what you are destroying.

Spinning webs, or a web over your face

Spinning a web yourself is building something slowly from your own resources, a work or a plan, and the dream asks whether it will be a home or a trap for others. A web over your face or tangled in your hair is confusion clouding your judgement, and brushing it away is clarity returning. Walking straight through a web without stopping is refusing to be held by a trifling obligation. A web shining with dew in the morning light is a patient work that has become beautiful.

A spider on you, in your hair or in your bed

A spider crawling on your body is a worry, or a person, come too close, and brushing it off is setting a boundary. In your hair it is a thought that has taken hold and keeps returning. In your bed it touches the marriage or your private life: someone weaving between you and your partner, or a worry you carry to bed each night. A spider in a baby's cot calls for protection over the child, through the recitations said over children before sleep.

Black, white, brown and big spiders

A black spider is the strongest form of cunning, a deliberate scheme or a person who means harm, and interpreters connect a black spider that keeps returning with the eye and with sihr. A white spider is cunning dressed as innocence, someone who seems harmless, and for some interpreters an honest, patient craft. A brown spider is an ordinary trouble of daily life; a red one is anger behind a scheme. A big, hairy spider or a tarantula is a fear you have allowed to grow large, and its size is the size of the fear, not of its real strength.

Many spiders in a dream

A crowd of spiders is a swarm of minor, nagging troubles, gossip moving through a circle of people, or anxieties that have multiplied. Spiders coming out of the walls are troubles already present in your surroundings and now shown to you. A nest of tiny spiders is a small problem that will multiply if it is left alone. Spiders fleeing from you are troubles leaving your life.

Spider dream for a woman, a pregnant woman, a man and a single person

For a woman, a spider is often a woman of cunning in her circle, or a household matter growing tangled, while a spider weaving quietly in her home is patient work that will leave her house well kept. For a pregnant woman, a spider is anxiety or envy around her, and a spider she sees leave the room is that envy turned away; the dream speaks of protection, never of harm to the child.

For a man, a spider is a manipulative rival or a scheme at work, and killing it is coming out ahead. For a single person, a spider near a suitor is a warning about that person's intentions, and the dream asks for istikhara.
