A lion in a dream is a person of great power, whether a ruler, a formidable adversary or a strong protector, and the dreamer's place beside the beast tells which. A lion that comes at the dreamer is harm from an authority or a strong enemy; being bitten or clawed is that harm reaching them, and escaping is safety from it.
Dream meaning Dreaming of a lion
Symbols
Fighting a lion is a contest with a powerful person, and overcoming it is victory over them; a lion that is tamed, led on a chain or lying down at the dreamer's feet is a powerful person made gentle toward them, or an enemy turned friend. Riding a lion is taking hold of a great and dangerous matter, or authority over those who were feared.
A lion guarding the dreamer's house is a strong protector standing over the family. A lion's skin, mane or meat is wealth or standing that comes from a person of power. A lioness is a woman of strength with a fierce protectiveness over her own. A lion cub is a young person of promise who will become strong, and raising it is a responsibility that grows.
A lion entering a town is a ruler's arrival or a trial spreading among its people. The Companions called Hamza the Lion of God for his courage, so a lion beside the believers is courage in the cause of right; and Daniel, thrown into the lions' den, was kept safe, so lions that do not touch the dreamer are protection by faith.
The Qur'an likens those who run from a reminder to frightened donkeys fleeing a lion, so a dream of fleeing from a lion is also a call back to what one has been avoiding.
Spiritual meaning of a lion in a dream
The lion is power that does not need to explain itself. In a dream it stands for authority, courage and the strength that either protects or devours, and the first thing to read is the lion's attitude toward you. A lion that ignores you is power present in your life that has not yet turned your way; a lion that looks at you is the attention of someone strong; a lion that walks beside you is strength lent to you. Dreamers often wake with the sense of having met something larger than themselves, and that sense is the message: a great matter is near, and your courage is being called for.
Biblical meaning of a lion in dreams
Scripture uses the lion on both sides. Christ is the Lion of the tribe of Judah in Revelation, the one found worthy to open the sealed book, and Proverbs says the righteous are bold as a lion while the wicked flee when no one pursues. A calm, majestic lion is read by Christian dreamers as the presence and authority of God, or a summons to boldness in faith.
Yet Peter warns that the adversary prowls like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour, so a lion stalking you is temptation or an enemy waiting for a careless moment. Samson tore a lion apart with his bare hands and later found honey in its carcass, and David struck down the lion that took a lamb from his flock: overcoming a lion is victory given by God, and sweetness found later in what once threatened. Daniel's night in the den is protection in the very place of danger.
Islamic interpretation of the lion (Ibn Sirin)
In the dream books attributed to Ibn Sirin, the lion is a powerful ruler, often an unjust one, or a formidable enemy. Wrestling with a lion is a dispute with such a person, and whoever prevails in the dream prevails in waking life. Eating lion's meat is wealth gained from a person in authority, and taking its skin or bones is the same in smaller measure. When a lion walks into a town, the reading is a tyrant come to rule it, or a trial that reaches every house.
The Prophet's uncle Hamza was called the Lion of God and of His Messenger, and Ali carried the lion's name Haydar, so in Muslim memory the lion also stands for courage on the side of right. A lion that guards rather than threatens is that courage given to the dreamer.
Lion dreams in psychology: Jung and Freud
Freud wrote that wild beasts in dreams stand for passionate impulses, the dreamer's own or other people's, and that a feared animal is often a disguised figure of the father. A lion in that reading is a commanding presence the dreamer both fears and admires. Jung saw in the lion raw instinctual energy, and in the alchemical texts he studied the lion is the fierce stage of matter that must be tamed and transformed before the gold appears. Taming or befriending a lion is, in his terms, taking that force into yourself rather than being ruled by it.
A lion attacking or chasing you in a dream
A lion that attacks is harm from a person of power or a strong enemy: a superior, an authority, a rival with more means than you. A bite or a claw mark is that harm landing, and the depth of the wound is its weight. Being chased by a lion is pressure from such a person, or from a matter you have been avoiding, and escaping is safety. Standing your ground until the lion turns away is your firmness winning respect. A lion attacking a member of your family is a trial reaching them and a call to stand beside them.
A tame lion, or a lion in the house
A lion that lets you stroke its mane is someone strong whose favour you will win: a patron, an employer, an elder. Feeding a lion is serving someone in authority and receiving benefit from it. A lion in the house that harms no one is a strong protector over the family, often the father or husband; a lion in the house that threatens is a domineering person within it, or a pressure the whole household feels. A sleeping lion is danger at rest, and the dream counsels leaving alone a matter better not woken.
Killing a lion, or riding one
Killing a lion is victory over a powerful enemy or a great difficulty, and few dreams are stronger for someone facing a fight they did not choose. Sitting astride a lion is authority of a dangerous kind: held steadily, it is command over those who were feared, and falling from it is losing that position. Fighting a lion with neither side winning is a contest that will be long.
Lioness and lion cubs in a dream
The lioness is a strong woman who guards her own without hesitation: a mother, a wife who holds her household together, a woman of standing. A lioness hunting is that woman acting on her family's behalf. Lion cubs are children who will grow strong, or a young venture with great promise, and raising a cub is a responsibility that grows with you. A lioness with her cubs is a household guarded and a family well led.
White, black and golden lions
A white lion is power joined with purity: a just authority, a righteous protector, or spiritual strength given to the dreamer. A black lion is great power that is severe, a formidable enemy or a heavy authority, and when it comes night after night with fear in the room it is read alongside the other signs of the unseen at work. A golden lion is honour and success at their height. A lion with a full mane is a man of authority in his prime; an old or thin lion is power past its peak.
Lion dream for a woman and a pregnant woman
For a woman, a lion is a man of strength in her life: a protective husband, a demanding father, or a suitor of standing, and its gentleness or anger toward her tells which. A lion lying across her doorway is protection over her.
For a pregnant woman, a calm lion or a cub is a child of strong character, read by interpreters as a child who will grow up with courage and standing. A lion that does not harm her is a safe passage through what lies ahead.
Lion dream for a man and a single person
For a man, a lion is a superior, a rival or his own ambition. Facing it is meeting a powerful person on equal terms, and a lion yielding to him is advancement and authority. For a single person, a lion is a strong suitor or a bond with someone of standing; a gentle lion approaching is an approach from such a person, and the dream asks for istikhara before an answer is given.
