A horse in a dream is honour, authority and good fortune, for the Prophet said that good is tied to the forelocks of horses until the Day of Resurrection. Riding a horse that obeys the rein is honour and command: a position held well, a matter going as the dreamer wishes, a journey that succeeds. Riding it with a saddle and fine harness is honour joined with wealth.
Dream meaning Dreaming of a horse
Symbols
A horse that bolts or will not be ruled is a matter slipping out of the dreamer's control, or a desire that is doing the riding, and bringing it back under the rein is mastery of oneself; falling from a horse is losing a position or a support, and remounting is recovering it.
A white horse is honour and a good name; a black horse is authority and a standing that commands respect; a horse with wings is a great honour or a journey made swiftly. A mare is a woman of nobility, and for a man it is a good marriage.
Grooming, feeding and watering a horse is caring for one's means and one's strength so that they carry the dreamer further; a lame or exhausted horse is means spent without rest, and the dream counsels rest before the next stage. Buying a horse is acquiring standing; selling it is giving standing up.
The Prophet was carried on the Night Journey by the Buraq, so a shining mount that carries the dreamer toward a holy place is an ascent in faith and honour. In the Persian epic, Rostam's horse Raksh is his fortune itself, and a horse that carries its rider through danger is protection.
Spiritual meaning of a horse in a dream
The horse is strength that has agreed to carry you. In a dream it stands for the power you have to move through life: your energy, your means, your standing, your drive. The bond between rider and horse is the heart of the reading. A horse that answers the rein is power well governed; a horse that runs where it likes is strength slipped out of your hands, or a desire that is leading you. Horse dreams come when you are about to set out, or when you are asking whether you have the strength for the road ahead.
Biblical meaning of horses in dreams
Horses in the Bible are power, war and divine sending. The four horsemen of Revelation ride a white horse of conquest, a red horse that takes peace from the earth, a black horse whose rider holds scales of scarcity, and a pale horse whose rider is Death, and Christian dreamers often read a horse's colour through them. At the close of Revelation the rider on a white horse is called Faithful and True, which makes a white horse victory and righteousness.
Elijah was taken up by a chariot of fire drawn by horses of fire, so a fiery horse is an ascent or a sudden calling. Zechariah saw horses of different colours sent to patrol the earth, and horses in a dream are often messengers. The psalm says some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord: pride in horses is a call to rest your confidence in God rather than in your strength.
Islamic interpretation of the horse (Ibn Sirin)
In the dream books attributed to Ibn Sirin, the horse is honour, glory and authority, and riding a horse that obeys is gaining them. A horse that bolts beneath its rider is a sin he is drawn into, or a matter governed by desire. A mare is a noble woman, and for a man a good wife; a winged horse is a great honour or an authority that rises quickly.
The Qur'an swears by the charging horses in Surat al-Adiyat, panting and striking sparks as they raid at dawn, and names fine horses among the adornments of this life beside wealth and children. By the Qur'an's account Solomon was so taken with his fine horses that the remembrance of his Lord slipped until the sun had set, so a horse dream for a Muslim dreamer holds both honour and the warning not to be distracted by it.
Horse dreams in psychology: Jung and Freud
Freud's case of Little Hans, the boy afraid of horses, made the horse in psychoanalysis a disguised image of the father, powerful and feared, and a Freudian reading of a horse dream looks for a figure of authority and the dreamer's feelings toward it. Jung saw the horse as the animal side of the psyche, instinct and vital energy carrying consciousness as a horse carries its rider, and in Symbols of Transformation he also linked it with the mother. A rider in harmony with the horse is, in his terms, a person at peace with their instincts; a horse that bolts is instinct overriding the will.
Riding a horse in a dream
Riding a horse that answers you is honour, command and a matter going as you wish, and galloping across open country is swift progress. Riding bareback is power without its trappings, effort that relies on your own strength. Riding uphill is labour toward a high aim; riding with someone behind you is carrying another person's affairs. Winning a race on horseback is success over rivals, and riding into battle is a contest entered with honour.
A wild horse, or being thrown from a horse
Being thrown by a horse is a sudden setback, a position or a support lost through a matter you could not hold, and climbing back on is recovering it. Being dragged with your foot caught in the stirrup is being pulled along by a matter or a desire you no longer steer. A wild horse you cannot catch is an ambition not yet within reach; taming a wild horse is mastering yourself, or winning over a proud person. A horse that refuses to move is a matter stalled until you change your approach.
A horse running, kicking or biting
A herd of horses running free is energy, freedom and a gathering of strength, often good news arriving in numbers. A horse running toward you is news or an opportunity coming fast; a horse running away from you is an opportunity or a support slipping away. A horse kicking you is harm from someone you serve or depend on, or a rebuke from a person of standing, and a horse biting is a sharp word from a strong person.
A dead horse, a sick horse or a foal
A dead horse is strength or standing lost, a support gone, or a stage of life ended, and burying it is accepting that end. A sick horse you tend back to health is a work or a means you restore with patience. A mare giving birth to a foal is a new beginning that will grow into strength: a child, a business, a project. A foal at its mother's side is a young person in good care.
White, black, brown and red horses
A white horse is honour, a good name, victory and a pure intention, and in the Christian reading it is the horse of the Faithful and True. A black horse is authority and respect, a matter of weight; in Revelation it carries scales and speaks of scarcity. A brown horse is steady work and reliable means. A red or chestnut horse is energy, passion and courage, and since the red horse of Revelation takes peace from the earth, Christian dreamers read it as a time of conflict. A grey or dappled horse is wisdom earned through experience; a golden horse is honour and wealth at their height.
Horse dream for a woman and a pregnant woman
For a woman, a horse is her strength and standing, and riding one is honour and independence; a man leading her horse is a husband or protector who carries her forward. For a single woman, a white horse arriving at her door is a proposal from a man of good name.
For a pregnant woman, a calm horse is strength for what lies ahead, and a mare with her foal is a safe arrival and a child who will be strong and noble.
Horse dream for a man and a single person
For a man, the horse is his work and his honour: a strong horse is a good position, buying one is advancement, and caring for it is caring for his livelihood. A mare is a good marriage for him. For a single person, riding beside another rider is a companion for the road of life, and a saddled horse brought to the door is marriage approaching.
