Dream meaning Dreaming of a door

A door in a dream stands at the border between what you know and what you have yet to enter, a threshold that invites and frightens at once. Whether it is open, closed or locked matters, and so does whether you walk through, hesitate, knock or turn away. Doors carry weight in scripture.

The Qur'an tells believers to enter houses by their doors, and in the story of Joseph the woman who desires him bolts the doors, until both race for the door and his shirt is torn from behind. Jesus promised that the door will be opened to the one who knocks. A story told of Rabi'a al-Adawiyya has a friend saying that whoever keeps knocking will see the door open; she asked when it had ever been shut.

Classical interpreters read the door of a house as the person who heads it, and a door opening as provision or relief on its way. An open door is provision or relief coming, and an invitation to enter a matter; a locked one is a matter not yet ready to open, or a head of household who withholds. Knocking with no answer is a request whose time has not come, so keep knocking, as the friend in Rabi'a's story said.

Many doors are many ways in, and the istikhara chooses among them; closing a door is an ending, or protection. A new door fitted to your house is a new head or support for the household, and a broken door is strain in its head. A door forced open by someone else is an intrusion to guard against.
