Dream meaning Dreaming of a bridge

A bridge in a dream joins two shores, and it is passage: from one stage of life to another, from one person to another, from who you were to who you are becoming. The reading changes as you cross with confidence, stop halfway, or feel it give way beneath you. Few images are older.

Islamic teaching describes the Sirat, the bridge every soul crosses on the Day of Judgement, and a report preserved in Sahih Muslim calls it finer than a hair and sharper than a sword. Muslim writers also kept a saying attributed to Jesus, that the world is a bridge: cross it, and build no house upon it. The Mughal emperor Akbar had those words carved on the great gate of Fatehpur Sikri.

Classical interpreters read crossing a bridge as moving from one condition to another. In Provence, legend tells of a shepherd boy, Bénézet, who heard a call from heaven to build a bridge across the Rhône at Avignon. Crossing calmly is a change of condition that will go well; stopping in the middle is a matter held between two states.

A bridge that cracks or collapses is a means you rely on, in work or in a marriage, that needs strengthening before you trust it with more weight. A narrow rope bridge is a hard passage that asks for steadiness, and the Sirat is its reminder; building a bridge is a reconciliation you can begin. Someone waiting on the other side is who, or what, the crossing is for.
