Dream meaning Dreaming of a broken mirror

A cracked mirror in a dream startles because it breaks the smooth face we expect to meet, and what it touches is a marriage, a standing, and a truth seen or avoided. Everything depends on the break: a hairline crack, a shattered pane, or a mirror you will not look into. Mirrors have long stood for the heart and for honest sight.

The Prophet said that a believer is the mirror of his brother, reflecting back what the other cannot see. Rumi tells of a contest between Chinese and Greek painters: while the Chinese covered their wall with colour, the Greeks only polished theirs, until it reflected the painting more beautifully than the original, and so, he says, does a heart polished clean.

The interpreters take a mirror for the dreamer's spouse or standing, so a broken one points to strain in either. In Japan, broken bowls are mended with gold, so that the repair becomes part of their beauty. A fine crack is a small strain in a marriage or in your standing that can still be mended; a shattered mirror is a larger break there, and the dream is telling you to attend to it now.

Seeing your face in pieces is a matter that divides you between people who pull in different directions, and refusing to look is a truth you are putting off. Cutting yourself on the glass is harm that comes from that strain, and mending the mirror is reconciliation and restored standing.
