An angel in a dream arrives as light that carries a message, and the first question is what it came to say. In the Islamic tradition of ta'bir, angels are read as honour, glad tidings and protection: seeing them descend on a place announces mercy or relief for its people, and receiving something from an angel's hand is counted a gift of knowledge or rank.

The Qur'an names Jibril as the bearer of revelation, and interpreters extended that office to sleep: the angel brings what the soul most needs to hear. An angel who smiles or greets you is good news for your affairs; one who warns, or turns away, asks you to look again at a choice you are making; an angel who speaks your name often marks a vocation or a responsibility on its way. Notice too how you woke, because the calm that follows such a dream is part of its message. Tell it only to someone who loves you, and act on what it brought.
