Dream meaning Dreaming of a raven

A raven in a dream crosses the sky like a dark letter, and it carries more than one message. It is among the most intelligent of birds, and the traditions have given it the roles of messenger, teacher and witness. In the Qur'an God sends a raven to scratch the earth and show Cain how to bury his brother, so the bird enters Islamic memory as the teacher of a hard lesson learned late.

In the flood story Noah sends out a raven before the dove, and in Norse myth two ravens, Thought and Memory, fly across the world each day and return to speak into Odin's ear. Arabic poetry named it the raven of parting, the bird whose cry announced a caravan's departure, and the interpreters read it as news of distance, a restless traveller, or a person with a double tongue.

A raven that speaks to you brings information you would rather avoid and need to know. A raven circling a house is a separation or a change of residence; a raven feeding from your hand is a double-tongued person who depends on you; a white raven is something rare and unexpected. A raven digging, like the one Cain watched, is a hard lesson that comes late, and an unfinished matter to be settled with dignity.
