A rose in a dream brings affection and joy: a beloved, a child, a gift of love, praise or good news. Its colour, its place and its fate tell how the joy runs.

A rose on its bush in a garden is a joy that stays and grows, a child in the family or a woman of beauty and good character; a rose picked and held is a joy that comes quickly and passes quickly, for the rose's life is short, and a picked rose that wilts is a promise that did not hold. Being given a rose is affection offered, a proposal or good news from the one who gives it, and giving a rose is love declared.

Smelling a rose is pleasant news, praise and a good name; rose water is praise that spreads and a kindness that refreshes. A red rose is love and celebration; a white rose, a pure intention and a clean heart; a garland of roses, a wedding or an honour. Being pricked by the thorn while picking a rose is the trouble that comes with a pleasure, or the price of nearness to someone dear.

Roses out of season are a joy that arrives unexpectedly. In Persian poetry the rose and the nightingale are the beloved and the lover who cannot stop singing to it, and Saadi named his book of wisdom the Rose Garden; in Ottoman devotional poetry the rose stands for the Prophet himself, whose remembrance is a fragrance.
