Dream meaning Dreaming of losing a limb

Amputation in a dream is jarring, and it asks what has been cut away, or must be, so that life can go on. The reading looks at which part of the body is lost, whether the loss is forced or chosen to save the whole, and how you live afterwards in the dream. Faith traditions hold stories of loss borne with dignity.

Urwa ibn al-Zubayr, a scholar of Medina, lost his leg to gangrene in the same season that one of his sons died, and is remembered for saying: God, You gave me seven sons and took one, four limbs and took one; praise be to You for what You left. Ja'far ibn Abi Talib lost both arms carrying the banner at Mu'tah, and the Prophet said God had given him two wings in Paradise.

A hand stands for a brother, a friend or a partner, so a severed hand is separation from one of them. Losing a hand is also losing a means, a craft or a support; losing a leg is losing a standing or a means of travel. Choosing amputation to save the body is a painful sacrifice that protects the whole, such as ending a partnership, a habit or a role, and Urwa's praise shows how it is borne.

Feeling a limb that is gone is attachment to what has left, and learning to walk again is being given another means in its place. The dream is never read as harm coming to a named person. For those living with limb loss, dreams of an intact body are common and carry no bad omen.
