Bound and blindfolded, a woman stands on marshy ground with eight swords planted around her like a fence. A castle sits on a rock far behind. Her feet are free, and the swords do not close the circle. She could walk out. This is the prison made of one's own thoughts.

Upright
You feel trapped, and the trap is mostly in your mind. The Eight of Swords shows a person convinced there is no way out, held by fear, by what others think, by her own harsh thoughts. Look again. The bindings are loose and there is a gap in the swords. Stop waiting for rescue. Take one step, then another, and the fence falls behind you.
Reversed
Off comes the blindfold. This is release: you see the way out and take it, shedding old fears and the beliefs that kept you small. For some, the Eight of Swords reversed shows the prison deepening as self-criticism tightens the ropes. You have more freedom than you believed. Use it.
In love
You feel stuck in a matter of the heart, unable to stay and unable to leave, or convinced that no one will want you. These are thoughts, not facts. In a relationship, say what you have not dared to say. You are freer than you feel.
In work
You feel boxed in by a job, by rules, by the sense of having no options. Fear is doing most of the binding. Examine each restriction and ask whether it is real. Ask someone else how your situation looks from outside. One small action breaks the paralysis.
Yes or no?
No. Fear has you bound for now, and the way forward is not yet open.
