On a ridge a man holds a staff across his body, fending off six more that thrust up at him from below. He wears two different shoes; he was caught unprepared. He holds the high ground all the same. This is defence: standing up for your position under pressure.

Upright
Something of yours is worth defending, and it is being challenged. The Seven of Wands says hold your ground. You are in the stronger position even though you feel outnumbered. Do not explain yourself to everyone or try to please the crowd. State where you stand, keep your footing, and persist. Courage settles this, not compromise.
Reversed
You are worn down by defending. Turned over, the Seven of Wands shows someone overwhelmed, giving way under criticism, or fighting on every front at once. It also shows defensiveness where nobody is attacking. Choose the one hill that matters and give up the rest without shame.
In love
This love has to be stood up for, against outside opinion, rivals or circumstances. Protect the relationship, and protect your own boundaries within it. If you are single, do not lower your standards because others tell you to. Know what you want and hold to it.
In work
Competition presses on your position. Others want what you have built, or they challenge your ideas. Defend your work with conviction and come prepared, with your facts in order. You are ahead, which is why you are the target. Persistence keeps you there.
Yes or no?
Yes. Stand firm and defend your position, and you keep the high ground.
